Our Lab
The lab is still small, having been established just over a year ago. There are 3 full-time members, 1 undergraduate student worker, an undergraduate summer research student (2011) and a rotating graduate student (2012).Michael Butterworth (PI)

I obtained my PhD from the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa in 2002. Both my undergraduate and graduate studies were carried out at UCT. As a South African native, I moved to Pittsburgh to undertake a postdoc with Raymond Frizzell and have remained at Pitt since then. As one of the first recipients of the NIH's K99/R00 - "Transition to Independence" awards, I established my own lab in late 2009 and began an independent research career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology. In summary I now have ~20 papers, and 3 funding sources. I am on the editorial boards of 4 journals including PLoS ONE and the American Journal of Physiology (Renal Physiology) and am involved with both graduate student, and medical student teaching.
